Stearns Residence – “The Place”
“The Place” is the Stearns family retreat west of Steamboat Lake on a thirty-five-acre tract that adjoins the Routt National Forest on the west. Let’s go up to “The Place.”
The clients wished to locate the residence to best take advantage of magnificent views of the lake and surrounding valley. Because of difficult topography on the site, a steep drive would have been required to access the house. Fortunately, we were able to work with the Forest Service to use a portion of an existing logging road and to build a short section of drive across the forest service property. This saved us from scarring the landscape with a steep, unmanageable drive, while still allowing us to place the house at the ideal location for the clients.
The home was designed to be low-maintenance, blend with the surroundings, be oriented for specific views, and catch the low winter sun. The program included a Master and Guest Bedrooms with an open Living, Dining and Kitchen area, a Study, a Hobby Room, and an oversized single garage for a jeep, snowmobile and storage.
