Moffat County School District RE-1 Administration Building

775 Yampa Ave, Craig, Colorado

Our renovation of the landmark Yampa Building in Craig, Colorado provided needed space for Moffat County school administration, pre-school, and community classrooms while giving new life to a building that was important to the community.

Initially, the Moffat County School District wanted to build a new facility on the site of the demolished Breeze Street Elementary School. The proposed site, since converted to a park, created controversy, as the community wanted to keep their park and to preserve the 1920’s era Yampa Building, formerly a Junior High School. The community feared the Yampa Building would be demolished like the Breeze Street Elementary School and the town would lose an important part of its heritage and character.

After a few crowded school board meetings, the board decided to completely refurbish the Yampa Building. Although the cost of refurbishing was more expensive, the community felt that it was worthwhile to preserve this landmark building.

The central, two-story portion of the Yampa Building was built in 1920 and the north and south wings were added in 1938 completing the footprint you see today. Our challenge was to maintain the historic character of the building while modernizing it to make the most efficient use of the space. The major remodel included structural repairs, new thermal envelope, new roof and flashings, new windows and doors, new electrical and mechanical systems, and all new interior finishes.
